Garden maintenance includes mulching, pruning, weeding and fall cleanups. Our new garden installations could include lawn removal, bed preparation, planting, and sodding. We care for ornamental gardens. We are NOT urban farmers. We are NOT a lawn care company.

 

What's it like to work at Gardens in the City?

Location: Walk from Kipling subway station, Toronto, Ontario

At Gardens in the City our customers rely on us, and we rely on each other. If you are responsible, energetic, and fun to work with you would be a good fit for our team. A strong knowledge of plant materials (identification, care, pests), and eagerness to learn more would be especially welcome.

Garden maintenance includes mulching, pruning, weeding and fall cleanups. Our new garden installations could include lawn removal, bed preparation, planting, and sodding. We care for ornamental gardens. We are NOT urban farmers. We are NOT a lawn care company.

Hours: are variable and sometimes unpredictable, as we can’t work in really nasty weather, and we don’t always know what state a garden is in before we arrive. We work weekdays usually starting at 7:00. Weekend and statutory holiday hours are rare and completely voluntary. We pay for every hour you are at work.

Knowledge Requirements: Ability to identify and maintain annual and perennial plants and shrubs, including pruning methods, weed knowledge, perennial plant care, and planting skills. Pest id and knowledge of control methods. Pollinator support knowledge. Up to date First Aid Training (required for Crew Lead). G driver’s license with clear driving record absolutely required for all candidates.

Tools: We do use smaller 2 stroke engines and electric tools, so familiarity is an asset.

Physical Requirements: You need to be energetic and fit with an ability to bend, lift loads up to 25 kgs., work outside in a wide range of weather for extended periods of time. Ability to work on the ground, kneeling or squatting, for extended periods. Willingness to take direction and ability to learn on the job.

Other Job Information: This is a small company. You will be working directly with the owner, and have the chance to learn all aspects of the business. This is an open book company and we believe in sharing success with everyone on the team. We use our profits to pay an end of year bonus.

Assets: Previous landscaping/professional gardening experience. Formal horticultural training. Make me believe that you want to learn to be a good gardener.

Where: We work across Toronto from Mississauga to Scarborough, south of the 401. We have a policy of enabling our employees to travel by public transit; you do not need your own vehicle. You do need safety boots.

HIRING NOW! Gardening Crew Lead April 1 to Dec 1 2017.

Who: You? Professional Gardener with several years experience caring for residential gardens with strong leadership and organizational skills.

Who: US? Integrity. Fairness. Caring for the environment.

What: Join us. Team cares for 150 residential gardens. Installs new gardens as well.

Where: Mostly downtown Toronto.

When: Apr 1 to Dec 1.

Required: Full driver’s license with clean record.

Assets: Experience driving cube vans in the city. Experience leading people to maintain schedules. Experience with customer service and sales. Knowledge of care for 2 stroke engines. Formal horticultural training, extensive knowledge of shrubs and perennials.

This is exactly the same job as the full season gardener job, but we need more help in the spring. If you want to travel or do something else with the later part of your summer, this position if for you!
